This book consists of all but two of the papers read or presented as a poster at a joint meeting of the British Region of the Biometric Society and the British Ecological Society held in 1982. The 26 contributions are divided in three sections. A. General: colour, feeding, movement and mi- gration (6), B. Analysis of census data (7), C. Survival (]3). In an introduction the editors provide a general setting for those papers that follow, though they admit that it is not very well possible to give a comprehensive review of the several papers. In my opinion the book pro- vides a good impression of the state of the art at this moment. Ornithology has been until recent times a science in which it was much more important to collect data than to answer interesting scientific questions.
