Selecta Acta Applicandae Mathematicae 7 (1986) 199 Book Reviews Donald C. Spencer: SELECTA, Vols. I-III, World Scientific, Singapore, 1985. The 1950's were an exciting decade for geometry. Looking back from our present perspective, it was a time of synthesis, when many separate threads and fragments from differential geometry, topology and analysis were integrated into a mathematical machine that, in succeeding years,'solved important problems and set the stage for much of present-day pure and applied mathematics. Don Spencer was a key player in this great game of building geometry, and the publication of these Selected Works gives us an opportunity to see it whole and in a more unified way. Few contemporary mathematicians have his breadth and background - from aeronautical engineering to number theory to pseudogroups and sheaves - and this wide experience surely played a role in the way that he went about developing grand theories. Those of us who are privileged to be his students and co-workers also know of his magnificent human spirit, which also finds its way into his mathematics. These Selecta are partitioned by topics.
