This edition of Recent Results in Cancer Research incorporates the various papers offered at the Symposium on Cancer Registry, of the Gesellschaft zur Bek/impfung der Krebskrankheiten Nordrhein-Westfalen, held in Diisseldorf in 1973. The participants represent local, national, and international cancer organizations located in Europe, America, and elsewhere. There is an attempt to place each paper, sometimes erroneously, under three main headings: Planning and Evaluation of Oncologic Registries, Opera- tion of Cancer Registries, and Studies of Epidemiology. Such a division is artificial, as all three are intimately interwoven into what is a total functioning of the registries. In other words, the working of these systems continuously requires planning based on both an evaluative and epidemiological feedback. Approximately one-third of the book is devoted to cancer-epidemiological research findings. This coverage thoroughly emphasizes the essential role of registries in elucidating the etiological and biological properties of tumors and, thus, preventive possibilities. The individual papers vary to a great extent in clarity and/or essential contents.
