Report by the first working group on epidemiology and crop loss assessment

Report by the first working group on epidemiology and crop loss assessment this meeting it was decided that a working group should be established to investigate methodology, terminology and general activity in the fields of epidemiology and crop loss assessment. Dr J. F. Brown of the University of New England was elected as convenor of this working group. The working group that was subsequently formed consisted of Dr John Brown (convenor). Dr Ronald Close (New Zealand), Mr Allan Mayfield (South Australia), Miss Melda Moffett (Queensland), Mr Richard Paddick (Victoria), Dr Brian Stynes (Western Australia), Mr Collin Wellings (New South Wales) and Mr Peter Williams (Tasmania). The working group was asked to study the feasibility of setting guidelines for standardization of methods and terminology in the area of epidemiology and crop loss assessment. It became apparent at the Lincoln College meeting that with crops such as wheat there are at least three growth stage keys that are in common use in the Australasian region. These include the Feekes scale (Large, 1954l. the decimal scale that was published by Zadok's et at. (1974) and the Romig scale (Calpouzos, et at. 1976). Other scales have been used in Europe and elsewhere. Similarly, with plants other than cereals, there are a range of methods used http://www.deepdyve.com/assets/images/DeepDyve-Logo-lg.png Australasian Plant Pathology Springer Journals
