This book contains the Proceedings of the Fourth International Symposium on Palaeolimnology, held from 2- 7 September, 1985, at Ossiach (Austria). As The Netherlands lack deep, natural lakes, this country is not well suited for palaeolimnological studies. Being the only Dutch participant, I was an outsider at the symposium wondering at the diversity of interdisciplinary research that was presented by over hundred scientists. The 57 papers in the book are a state-of-the-art in palaeolimnology. David Frey, who opened the symposium, could not give a good definition of palaeolimnology, because he thought it already difficult to give a good definition of limnology. The lack of formal organization of the discipline is both its charm and its drawback. The charming aspects of the volume are that so many aspects of the history of lakes and earth are dealt with by so many different methods.
