ADVANCES INAQUATIC MICROBIOLOGY, volume l, 1977' M.R. Droop and W.H. Jannasch, Editors.Academic Press, London, New York, San Francisco The present book follows volume l of "Advances in Microbiology of the Sea" in an attempt to reduce the often rather artificial gap be- tween marine and freshwater microbiology. There are six papers, each of about 60 pages and all with numerous references. Although named "Advances ..." and published in 1977, the discouraging fact has to be mentioned that the manuscripts were com- pleted in early 1974. The first article, written by S.I. Kuznetsov and titled "Trends in the development of ecological microbiology" is virtually restricted to russian observations on planctonic and bacterial photosynthesis, sul- phate reduction, chemosynthesis, nitrogen fixation, and the degradation of organic matter. The chapter includes the description of natural ha- bitats, nut unfortunately no attempts were made to explain the observed distribution pattern of e.g. photosynthetic bacteria, despite the fact that the effects of light intensities are discussed. In the section on chemosynthesis, the contribution of heterotrophic bacteria to the oxi- dation of sulphide is omitted. The paper is highly recommended to all "lab ecologists". C.M. Brown and B. Johnson contributed a clearly written paper on the
