Agroforestry Systems 40: 249252, 1998. © 1998 Kluwer Academic Publishers. Printed in the Netherlands. Continuing depletion of tropical rainforests in the humid lowlands of west and central Africa has been an issue of growing concern in the region since the late 1970s. Several National Agricultural Research Systems (NARS), International Agricultural Research Centers (IARCs) and Non-governmental organizations (NGOs) have been actively involved in Agroforestry research and development as an approach to addressing the problem. These efforts have, however, been largely uncoordinated, and they often involved duplication of work. To help overcome this problem and promote regional cooperation, the Humid West Africa Research Programme of the International Centre for Research in Agroforestry (ICRAF-HULWA), Cameroon, organized a Regional Symposium on Agroforestry Research and Development in the Humid Lowlands of West and Central Africa on 4 to 8 December 1995 in Yaounde, Cameroon. The symposium was cosponsored by the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA), Nigeria, and the Centre de Coopération International en Recherche Agronomique pour le Développement (CIRAD), France. The specific objectives were to take stock of agroforestry research and development activities in the region, exchange information on research results and identify information gaps, set research priorities, and strengthen regional collaboration
