Preface

Preface The earliest collection of papers on this topic were the three volumes entitled "Logic and Databases" edited by Gallaire, Minker and Nicolas (Plenum Press, New York). The first of these volumes was compiled in 1978 and the papers reflected the interest of researchers in Artificial Intelligence and Logic in prob- lems of Database Theory. Subsequent volumes show database researchers enter- ing the foray and applying logic to problems in their areas. It is fair to say that these three volumes capture the earliest history of the area of Deductive Data- bases, and provided the initial set of problems that researchers attacked. Salient amongst this initial list of problems was that of recursive query processing, a problem that was to be addressed by a few score papers over the next years, to an extent that today it constitutes an area of research by itself. The next collection of papers in Deductive Databases grew out of a workshop held in Washington DC, in 1986, organized by Prof. Jack Minker. This collection of papers, entitled "Foundations of Deductive Databases and Logic Program- ming", also gave birth to many new research problems, the most important, in our opinion, being that of the problem http://www.deepdyve.com/assets/images/DeepDyve-Logo-lg.png Annals of Mathematics and Artificial Intelligence Springer Journals
