Preface

Preface Agroforestrv Systems 36: v-viii, 1997. Man has been creating, maintaining, and converting Imperata cylindrica grass- lands for centuries. Quite vast areas of these grasslands now exist in most countries in tropical Asia, some parts of West Africa, and to a limited extent in Latin America. As populations increase, and forests disappear, many believe that these grasslands are a largely underutilized resource. The countries affected want to increase the contribution of these lands to the local and national economies, and enhance their environmental services. A number of research and development institutions are devoting attention to the diverse problems and challenges in this effort. Much of the past discourse on Imperata has focussed on the plant as a weed, and the prospective solutions were often viewed as a weed control problem. Inadequate attention has been given to factors involved in the evo- lution of Imperata grasslands, and how local land use systems may be inten- sified. It is now widely recognized that smallholder farm communities in the grasslands are usually the key to more productive and sustainable utilization. But the ways that they manage their land resources, and the values and realities underlying their land management systems, are little understood.
