She further noted that not only are we apt to see a child “ failing at gender ” when he or she fi nds solace or comfort in engaging in non-gender appropriate behaviors, but we are also more likely to assume the behavior is a symptom or defense from trauma that the child has experienced. This position can be detrimental, stigmatizing, and limiting of the possible benefi ts gained by gender fl exibility. Goldner asked, “ Is the gender identity problem theirs or ours? ” Goldner concluded her presentation with several “ conundrums ” to consider: “ Is it acceptable for a trans person to alter one part of their body and not another? Can an individual create her or his own gender? Who has the right to determine what a person can do to their body? ” And fi nally, Goldner asked, “ Should there be a limit to a person ’ s autonomy over their body? ” A lively discussion followed.
