Samenvatting Inleiding Oorpijn is een veelvoorkomend symptoom van otitis media acuta (OMA) en staat centraal in de ziektebeleving van kinderen en hun ouders. In de praktijk blijken (huis)artsen niet altijd duidelijke adviezen over pijnstilling te geven, en zijn ouders bovendien terughoudend in het doseren van pijnmedicatie. Het is onduidelijk welke rol de ideeën van huisartsen en ouders over pijnbestrijding bij kinderen met OMA hierin spelen. Methode Parallel aan een clustergerandomiseerd onderzoek naar een scholing voor huisartsen, gericht op het verbeteren van pijnbestrijding bij kinderen met OMA, voerden wij twee kwalitatieve interviewonderzoeken uit om deze ideeën exploreren. Resultaten Huisartsen gaven aan dat OMA een pijnlijke aandoening is en ouders hadden moeite om bij hun zieke kind symptomen van OMA te herkennen. Ze consulteerden de huisarts voor een diagnose en advies over behandelopties. Volgens huisartsen bood de scholing handvatten om het gebruik van pijnmedicatie meer te onderzoeken en specifieker te adviseren. Ouders waardeerden dit advies en accepteerden een beleid zonder antibiotica, mits de huisarts helder uiteenzette waarom deze niet nodig waren. Ouders zeiden bij toekomstige ziekte-episoden van hun kind toch opnieuw een beroep op de huisarts te zullen doen ter bevestiging van de diagnose, ongeacht het effect van pijnmedicatie. Conclusie Onder huisartsen en ouders is er draagvlak én ruimte voor het verbeteren van pijnbestrijding bij kinderen met OMA. Huisartsen kunnen hierin een belangrijke rol vervullen door de aanpak van pijn explicieter met de ouders te bespreken.
