This stand-alone, two-volume publication is a forerunner to the forthcoming Encyclopedia of Life Support Systems (EOLSS), a joint effort between UNESCO and EOLSS (http://www.eolss.co.uk/). The Encyclopedia, available on-line from December 2001, will be a web-based archive mirroring both the diversity and the inherent interconnectivity of the Earth's Life Support Systems. In its publisher's words, it will be `a truly 21st century knowledge base, which will not only provide state-of-the-art information and expert opinion on virtually every aspect of the life support systems on which we depend, but will also forge pathways between disciplines in order to show their interdependence and help foster the transdisciplinary context required to fulfill the vision of sustainable development.' In approximately 1.9 million words spread over 2263 pages, the forerunner publication presents `integrated knowledge and world views related to the state of: Earth's natural resources, social resources, institutional resources, and economic and financial resources.
