Orthokomplementiire modulare Verbiinde und elliptische Riiume FRIEDRICH BACHMANN zum 60. Geburtstag gewidmet Von Hv.NN~,R KI~D~R und HILGV.R WOLFF in Kiel Der Ausgangspunkt fttr diese Note war die Beobachtung, dab sich die elliptische Geometrie aus einem einzigen Grundbegriff, dem der Hyper- ebene, und einer einzigen (zweistelligen) Grundrelation, der Orthogo- nalit~t, entwickeln l~Btl). Dementspreehend wird hier ein elliptischer Raum definiert als Menge M mit einer Relation _1_, die gewissen Axiomen geniigt, und yon da aus wird der AnschluB hergestellt an die Theorie der orthokomplement~ren modularen Verb~nde endlieher L~nge, die sich hier als nattirliehe Ver- allgemeinerung der Theorie der Teilraumverb~nde anisotroper hermite- scher metriseher Vektorr~ume anbietet. 0. Ein ortholcomplementdrer modularer Verband der Ldnge n ist ein Paar, bestehend aus einem modularen Verband V, <: mit einer maximalen Kette 0 ---- a 0 ~ a 1 9 <: 9 9 a~ ~- 1 und aus einer elliptischen PolaritiSt ' dieses Verbandes, also einer Abbildung a ~-~ a' yon V in sich mit a ~ b ==> b' ~_ a' sowie a" -~ a und a (~ a' : 0 fiir alle a, b e V (BIRK- HOFF [6] S. 123, GERICK~, [9] S. 106).
