Orconectes limosus (Raf.) andAstacus astacus L. (Crustacea, Decapoda) in The Netherlands ORCONECTES LIMOSUS (RAF.) AND ASTACUS ASTACUS L. (CRUSTACEA, DECAPODA) IN THE NETHERLANDS *) J.F.M. GEELEN (Laboratory of Aquatic Ecology, Catholic University, Nijmegen, The Netherlands) INTRODUCTION Up to the end of 1972 Astacus astacus was the only known crayfish in the Netherlands. HOLTHUIS (1950) mentioned in the"Fauna van Neder- land" 38 localities for the period |660-1947 from the southern and eastern part of the Netherlands. In 1972 a large population of another crayfish, Orconectes limos~s (Raf.) = Cambarus uffinis (Say), was found in the Julianakanaal (pro- vince of Limburg) (GEELEN and OOMEN, 1973). This species differs con- spicuously fromAstacus astacus by the presence of dark-red spots on the dorsal surface of its abdomen. The discovery of this second species re- sulted in a renewed investigation of crayfishes in the Netherlands. In the period February ]973 - January 1975 six students participated in the work. The purpose of this study was to elucidate: |. the present distribution of crayfishes in the Netherlands particular- ly the distribution and extension of O. limosus~ 2. the ecology of O. limosus in comparison with that of A.astacus, the native crayfish in the Netherlands. 3. to establish the origin of the population of O. limosus.
