ON THE ORIGIN OF ORGANIC MATTER ACCUMULATING ON TIDAL FLATS OF BALGZAND, DUTCH WADDEN SEA =.c. (Netherlands Institute for Sea Research (NIOZ), Texel) During one year (]974/1975) we followed the seasonal fluctuations i~ primary production of the benthic ~=roflora and the contents of chlorophyll ~, organic carbon and ATP in the top layer of t~e tidal flats on ~algzand. Transects and stations are i~dicated in Ylg. I. Re- sult~ of this study indicated an ~ncrease in organic carbon content of the surface sedi~nents of the tidal flats during the period March-June (Fig. 2) (see for more details CADEt and HEGEMAN, 1977). This increase s~guificantly exceeded the primary production during the same period of the benthic m~croflora living on these flats. This (late) spring in- crease ~n organic carbon was strongest on the high tidal flats farthest away from the Marsdfep inlet ~F~g. 2). In sltu primary production of phytoplankton was estimated to be too low to account for the unex- plained part of this increase. Phytoplankton primary production above these flats fs low because they are covered only part of the day. More- over, th~s water layer becemes th~nner and more turbid towards the high tidal flats. Therefore, the
