The second meeting in 1973 of the Society took place on 19 May. The theme was: "Theoretical aspects of morphogenesis". Prof. Dr. B. BE GROOT of Leiden University delivered a lecture on "Morphogenesis of bacteriophage T4". Viruses are essentially composed of a nucleic acid molecule surrounded by a protein envelope. In compli- cated viruses such as bacteriophage T4, the protein component is diffen- tiated into a coat, a midpiece with rings or disks and a central rod, connected with a base plate, to which adsorption fibres are attached to. In T 4 the various components are built up from polypeptides which are the direct products of the activity of genes clustered in an ordered fashion on the genome. Most processes of aggregation of structural elements are self-assemblage.
