IO.-- a year The aim of the Society is to stimulate theoretical reflection in biology and to further research in, and teaching of, general theories about life and its manifestations as well as axiomatics, logic and methodology of biology. The autumn meeting of the Society was held on November I3, I971 at Leiden. The general theme was "explanations in biology". Dr. G. J. DALENOORT, in his talk entitled "Scientific Explanations: Achilles and the Turtle", dealt with general aspects of scientific explana- tions. There is an analogy between proofs in mathematics and explana- tions in science in that in both cases certain phenomena are explained by deducing them from general principles. There are explanations at different levels: an explanation for a physiologist may be considered a mere description by a molecular biochemist.
