Netherlands Society for Theoretical Biology Acta Biotheoretica 26, 1:70-71 (1977) President: Prof. Dr. A. Lindenmayer, Department of Theoretical Biology, State University of Utrecht, Transitorium 2, Heidelberglaan 2, Utrecht, The Netherlands. Secretary: Drs. F. H. D. van Batenburg, Zoological Laboratory, State University of Leiden, Kaiserstraat 63, The Nether- lands. Treasurer: Dr. J. C. Jager, Department of Biology, Free University, de Boelelaan 1087, Amsterdam, Buitenveldert, The Netherlands. Subscription: Dfl. 10. - a year The society held a meeting on september 24th 1976 at Leiden. The theme of the meeting was: multivariate techniques in biology. The following lectures were presented: Drs. E. Meelis: Introduction. Prof. dr. F. Symons: Mathematical techniques in descriptive biology: a geometric approach. Drs. G. J. de Bruyn: A principal component model for the description of spatial distribution of Carabid beetles and Lycosid spiders. Drs. S.A.L.M. Kooijman: Statistical analysis of frequencies in pit fall traps assuming an optimal relationship with causal variables. In his introduction Meelis presented a superficial outline of the most com- mon multivariate techniques. Furthermore he stressed the difference between mathematically correct and biologically applicable analysis. According to his experience many biological problems cannot meet the requirements imposed by many very powerful mathematical techniques. This results in three different options.
