Miscellaneous International Symposium POLDERS OF THE WOR LD, October 4-9, 1982, The Netherlands. Land reclamation through the development of polders is of increasing importance throughout the world. The possibilities for this kind of development are found mostly in river flood plains, deltas and other relatively low lying areas. Very often these areas like wetlands and swamps are very fertile for agricultural purposes, have a high ecological value and are under a severe population pressure. Although there are many common problems when planning and developing polders, regardless of their geographic location, there has never been an international symposium dedicated to these problems and the way these problems should be treated. It is within this framework that the organization of a Symposium and Exhibition With the theme 'Polders of the World' is undertaken. The aims of the Symposium are to provide a comprehensive view of the several aspects of polder development and to give scientists, decision makers and managers a forum for discussing common problems. During the symposium the following themes will be discussed: land and water management, construction aspects, agricultural aspects, socio-economic aspects, and environmental aspects. Under the last theme the following topics are included: the natural values of deltas and http://www.deepdyve.com/assets/images/DeepDyve-Logo-lg.png Aquatic Ecology Springer Journals
