Mechanochemical-assisted synthesis and characterization of Al2O3/B4C ceramics

Mechanochemical-assisted synthesis and characterization of Al2O3/B4C ceramics Synthesis of the Al2O3-B4C ceramic was carried out in this study via mechanochemical method. A highest value of 64.72 m2/g was obtained at the end of milling for 6 h during the BET analyses carried out for determining the surface area of synthesis powders. The bond structures between Al–O and B–C were determined in FT-IR analysis in accordance with the data acquired from relevant literature. Peaks for only the Al2O3 and B4C phases were determined by XRD analysis before and after the leaching process especially after an 8 h milling. The Al2O3-B4C composite powder obtained after milling under optimum milling conditions for 8 h was shaped into pellet with and without the addition of 2% by weight binder (paraffin) in a uniaxial press and cold isostatic press. The Al2O3-B4C composite obtained has a relative density value of 86% after sintering in the Ar atmospheric tube furnace at 1550 °C. http://www.deepdyve.com/assets/images/DeepDyve-Logo-lg.png Journal of the Australian Ceramic Society Springer Journals

Abstract

Synthesis of the Al2O3-B4C ceramic was carried out in this study via mechanochemical method.
