Abstract

BOOK REVIEWS 309 trained psychoanalysts. In the absence of unlimited resources, it is important to ask questions about which interventions were most effective. For circumstances that might not allow for such multimodal treatment with multiple therapists, for example, how could this model be modified? In addition, the longitudinal nature of the project calls for the study of long-term effects of traumatic loss. We look forward to learning more from the project about treating traumatized families. Hollander’s (2010) exploration of the post 9/11 environment discusses the difficulty sustaining hope in these despairing times. Describing social conditions that are conducive to paranoid schizoid states of persecutory anxiety, she challenges psychoanalysts as citizens and clinicians to resist these states of mind and preserve the hope that emerges from “… the detailed and caring cultivation of knowing in the service of reparative capacities …”(p. 340). Beebe and her colleagues have done just that, offering hope to patients and therapists alike. In reading this moving book, we share that hope.
