Berger, Guest Editor In July 1990 shortly after being elected to serve as President of the Asso- ciation for the Advancement of Psychoanalysis I was delighted to learn my year of tenure would mark the fiftieth anniversary of the founding by Karen Horney of the Association, The American Journal of Psychoanalysis, and the American Institute for Psychoanalysis. At that moment a spark was struck and ignited in me to commemorate the occasion by creating this special issue of The American Journal of Psychoanalysis and to hold an all- day conference on November 2, 1991 at Hunter College in New York City on "Women Beyond Freud: New Concepts of Feminine Psychology," with such participants as Marianne Homey Eckardt, Susan Quinn, Helen Singer Kaplan, Jean Baker Miller, and Carole Gilligan. Mario Rendon invited me to serve as guest editor and I feverishly ap- proached the task of obtaining articles appropriate for the occasion.
