An isolate of Bacillus subtilis from the phylloplane of the forage legume Stylosanthes guianensis in the Amazon of Peru exhibited an antifimgal activity against a wide range of plant pathogenic fungi from various hosts. Mycelial growth, conidial germination, and conidial production by Colletotrichum gloeosporioides were significantly reduced in the presence of cells of B. subtilis or its cell-free culture filtrate. The effect of the cellfree culture filtratewas oAen comparable to or better than benomyl (530 μg/mL) in inhibiting fungal growth.
