With his death a distinguished per- sonality and a remarkable scientist endowed with a scholarly mind has gone into history. He was born at Arnhem, 7th March 19o 7 and studied medicine from I924-I93I at the Municipal University of Amsterdam. In I942 he defended his doctor's thesis "Low-frequency impedance of animal tissue". In I946 he was appointed ordinarius in physiology at Leiden University. It was mainly due to his diligence that a new physio- logical laboratory was built. Besides his interest in physiology he saw the importance of a theo- retical and philosophical approach to scientific problems. The title of his inaugural lecture "Life and natural science" was already a clear indication. It was, therefore, not to be wondered at, that in 196% on Prof. VAN DER KLAAUW'S retirement, the Directors of the Jan van der Hoeven-Foundation invited him to become co-director, and that Prof. DuYF~ accepted. He filled this po'sition until 1968 , when he was forced to withdraw for reasons of health.
