In Honour of Bill Wadge Math.comput.sci. 2 (2008), 1–3 c 2008 Birkh¨ auser Verlag Basel/Switzerland Mathematics in 1661-8270/010001-3, published online November 4, 2008 Computer Science DOI 10.1007/s11786-008-0061-7 John Plaice and Mehmet A. Orgun This special issue of Mathematics in Computer Science includes 8 fully refereed papers written in honour of the 60th cycle of William (Bill) Wadge, and of the extensive contributions he has made to mathematics and computer science. Bill Wadge was born in 1946 in Winnipeg, Manitoba, in the Canadian prairies. He was raised in Ottawa and in Penticton, in British Columbia’s Okanagan valley. As a precocious youngster, very much caught up in the excitement of the launching of Sputnik and the subsequent developments in science that took place throughout North America, he decided at the age of 11 that he was responsible for his own education. Bill excelled in his undergraduate studies in mathematics at the University of British Columbia (Canada), receiving the Silver Medal in his graduating year, with the highest scores in science. He continued on at the University of California, Berkeley (USA), under the supervision of John Addison. There, Bill worked in descriptive set theory, and classified the Baire space into what is now called the Wadge hierarchy http://www.deepdyve.com/assets/images/DeepDyve-Logo-lg.png Mathematics in Computer Science Springer Journals
