Lerner, Guest Editor In the academic year 1959-60, Jacques Lacan, who has been dubbed "the French Freud," took as theme of his weekly public seminar, "The Ethics of Psychoanalysis." The authors of the five papers that follow had access to the unpublished version of this series of seminars and read it together as a group. Without pretending to offer a complete r~sum~ of Lacan's thought in this area, they have selected certain themes character- istic of his reflection and provide clinical illustrations where possible. These papers were first presented at a panel of the 1984 Winter Meeting of the American Academy of Psychoanalysis. The editors are grateful to Norman Kelman, M.D., for his efforts in securing the papers for publication.
