Mathematikleistungen stehen im Zusammenhang mit Faktoren wie Einstellung zum Fach Mathematik, Selbstkonzept, Selbstwirksamkeit, Interesse, Motivation oder Ängstlichkeit gegenüber Mathematik. Im Artikel wird eine Untersuchung vorgestellt, in der 2458 Kinder im 5. und 1540 Jugendliche im 8. Schuljahr zur Einstellung zum Fach Mathematik und zu einer Begründung dafür befragt wurden. Die Ergebnisse zeigen, dass viele Kinder und Jugendliche das Fach Mathematik mögen, zum Teil auch bei schlechten Leistungen. Kinder und Jugendliche, die Mathematik mögen, begründen dies vor allem mit Interesse an der Sache und mit der Lebensrelevanz von Mathematik. Gute Leistungen stehen nur für einen Teil der Befragten im Vordergrund. Lernende, die Mathematik nicht mögen oder sogar hassen, nennen schlechte Leistungen, kein Interesse, aber auch negative Erlebnisse, die zum Teil mit dem Unterricht in Verbindung stehen.
