High-end Natural Gas Engine TCG 5.0 from Deutz Engines C OVER STORY E N gi NE s High-end Natural Gas Engine TCG 5.0 from Deutz Natural gas is particularly suitable as an energy source for reducing CO emissions from internal combustion engines, even in the commercial sector. On the one hand, due to its low carbon con- tent, less CO is produced during combustion compared to other fossil fuels. On the other hand, the recently much-discussed Power-to-X (PtX) method makes it possible to produce natural gas as a CO -neutral energy source in the future. Deutz is taking this development into account and has developed a high-performance natural gas engine for heavy-duty applications up to a func- tioning test bench demonstrator in cooperation with the University of Rostock. M OTIVATIO N Because natural gas has a low carbon content, when it is used as the energy source in combustion engines, approxi- mately 30 % less CO [1] is released com- pared with other carbon-based fuels while the same degree of thermodyna- mic engine efc fi iency is maintained. The PtX method, the subject of much recent discussion, also raises the possi- bility of manufacturing methane (SNG) from wind power and/or solar energy CO -neutrally.
