Von GONTER PILZ in Tucson und Wien In dieser Arbeit soll eine Ordnungstheorie fiir Fastringe begriindet werden. (Jberraschenderweise zeigt sich dabei, dad das FeMen des reehts- seitigen Distributivgesetzes zur Folge hat, dab Fastringe mit nieht- trivialem Konstanten-Unterfastring nur in sehr speziellen F~len total- geordnet werden kSnnen. In den beiden ersten Paragraphen wird eine zur Ringtheorie analoge Ordnungstheorie entwiekelt. Die beiden anderen Paragraphen besch~ftigen sieh mit der Existenz yon Ordnungsrelationen. w 1. Grundlagen der Theorie Unter einem Fastring verstehen wir eine algebraisehe Struktur (N, J-,.), so da~ F 1. (N, -}-) eine Gruppe, F2. (N, .) eine HaJbgruppe ist und F3. nl(n 2 .J- n3) -~ nlna ~ nln3 ffir alle nl, n2, n8 e N gilt. Beispiele ffir Fastringe liefern alle beziiglich der Substitution ab- geschlossenen Systeme yon Funktionen, welehe eine Gruppe in sich ab- bilden. Umgekehrt haben BER~X~ und SILVERMX~ in [2] bewiesen, da~ sich ]eder Fastring in den Fastring aUer Funktionen fiber einer Gruppe (G, -J-), mit -b und Substitution als Verknfipfungen, einbetten last. Ein Element k e N heil~t konstant, wenn Ok----k gilt. K bezeictme den Unterfastring aller konstanten Elemente. In Ringen und Fast- kSrpern (siehe etwa [6]) ist K -~ {0), daher ist der Fall
