From the Editors Advances in Health Sciences Education 1: 1-2, 1996. 1 © 1996 Kluwer Academic Publishers. Printed in the Netherlands. The launch of a new journal is an exhilarating event, and I am pleased that I was of this venture. But the inevitable question which arises is "Why asked to be a part Journal"? A colleague recently informed me that there are about 250,000 another academic journals published in the English language, so I guess this is number 250,001. Why, indeed? Depending on how you count them, there are already about five international journals devoted exclusively to medical education, and we have the opportunity to contribute to perhaps hundreds of others in medicine, education, or other social sciences. Perhaps the creation of a new journal was a psychology your esteemed co-editors, but rest assured that the bit of a whim on the part of (Kluwer) was anything but whimsical. A brief history approach of the publishers of the genesis of the journal might help reveal the unique role we hope it will fulfil. It began with negotiations between my co-editor, Henk Schmidt and Kluwer about the possibility of a journal devoted to Problem Based Learning.
