Foreword The GOAL in Language Teaching and Learning: Rapid, smooth, automatic mastery of the communicative processes jor the reception and transmission of symbolic language, built on con- sciously acquired and retrievable systematized structure. Papers, comments and book reviews in Bulletin XVII of the Orton Society, Inc., represent the viewpoints of the authors. The Orton Society, as a body is responsible only for the furthering of its purpose, "the study and treatment of children with Specific Language Disability." Material here published has been accepted or written by the editor in the light of her personal understanding of this responsibility. We are grateful to the authors whose work appears originally in this issue, and to those authors and publishers who have kindly consented to our reprinting previously published material. Each is credited in its place. As in previous years, many persons have helped make this Bulletin possible, through written contributions, editorial assistance and other forms of cooperation and to them our sincere thanks.
