Saldini 50, I-20133 Milano, Italy This volume collects the “tutorial papers” prepared for the conference SPT2004 Symmetry and Perturbation Theory, held in Cala Gonone (Sardinia, Italy) in June 2004. This was the fifth conference in the SPT series; previous conferences on “Symmetry and Perturbation Theory” were held in Torino (1996) [1], Roma (1998) [2], and in Cala Gonone (2001 and 2002) [3, 4]. The “regular proceedings” for this conference appear separately [5]. Repeating the initiative taken in occasion of the SPT2001 conference [6], some authors were asked to write down a paper suitable for introducing young (or less young) researchers into a field of their interest, not attempting to give a general panoramic of the subject, i.e. a review paper, but rather according to their own point of view. Many of these papers where ready before the conference, and in some case the final version appearing here has been modified making use of comments or questions which where raised in Cala Gonone, making this volume even more strictly related to the conference.
