Focus in Honor of Benjamin A. Garcia, Recipient of the 2018 ASMS Biemann Medal B American Society for Mass Spectrometry, 2019 J. Am. Soc. Mass Spectrom. (2019) 30:2447Y2448 DOI: 10.1007/s13361-019-02320-5 FOCUS: PROTEIN POST-TRANSLATIONAL MODIFICATIONS: EDITORIAL Focus in Honor of Benjamin A. Garcia, Recipient of the 2018 ASMS Biemann Medal he 2018 Biemann Medal was awarded to Professor Benjamin TA. Garcia at the 66th annual ASMS Conference for his numerous research contributions to bioanalytical mass spectrom- etry. Ben is widely known for his contributions to the develop- ment of new mass spectrometry methodologies and applications related to characterization of post-translational modifications, pri- marily in the context of epigenetic mechanisms. In particular, Ben has focused on unraveling the dynamics of histone modifications during cellular differentiation and disease. Deciphering this prob- lem integrates strategies in cell biology, genomics, and biochem- istry, with an emphasis on utilizing the most advanced mass spectrometry methods. Ben graduated from the University of California, Davis, in 2000, where he was first introduced to mass spectrome- try while working in the laboratory of Carlito Lebrilla. After graduating with his B.S. in Chemistry, Ben earned his Ph.D. in Chemistry in 2005 at the University of Virginia under the direction of Don Hunt where he was immersed in the field of proteomics.
