If a functional dependence is consciously perceived and used to solve problems, then this is regarded as functional thinking. The empirical research which was carried out between 1987 and 1992 had the aim to determine the age at which functional thinking develops. The investigation involved a total of 333 children aged between 6 and 11, whereby 65 were observed over a three to four year period.
