Es wird eine Forschungsarbeit vorgestellt, die im interdisziplinären Feld von Psychologie und Mathematikdidaktik angelegt ist. Der Artikel geht von der Frage aus, wie Lernende effektiv bei der Lösung von Aufgaben mit der Formel von Bayes unterstützt werden können. Ausgehend von Forschungsergebnissen der Kognitionspsychologie wird diskutiert, wie die in der Formel von Bayes zu verarbeitenden Teilmenge-Grundmenge-Beziehungen auf numerische, graphische und sprachliche Weise deutlich gemacht werden können und welche Auswirkungen dies auf die Lösungsfähigkeit beim Anwenden der Formel von Bayes hat. In einer Studie mit 171 Studierenden des Grundschullehramts wurde untersucht, welchen Einfluss einerseits die implizite bzw. explizite Beschreibung von Teilmenge-Grundmenge-Beziehungen und andererseits die Art der Visualisierung von Teilmenge-Grundmenge-Beziehungen auf die Bestimmung von Häufigkeitsverhältnissen hat. Dabei zeigte sich in hochsignifikanter Weise, dass ein explizites Frageformat günstiger als ein implizites Frageformat und die Visualisierung mit dem Einheitsquadrat günstiger als die Visualisierung mit einem Baumdiagramm ist. Zudem konnte insbesondere in Verbindung mit dem Baumdiagramm ein explizites Frageformat die Lösungsrate deutlich erhöhen. Diese Ergebnisse zeigen die fruchtbare Anwendung kognitionspsychologischer Erkenntnisse auf mathematikdidaktische Fragestellungen und bereichern sowohl die psychologische als auch die mathematikdidaktische Diskussion über Lösungsschwierigkeiten bei der Formel von Bayes.
