Potato purple top (PPT) disease has been reported worldwide, including Canada, United States, Mexico, Russia and Pakistan. During surveys carried out in a recent epidemic in Ecuador of potato purple top disease phytoplasmas were identified in symptomatic potatoes as well as in some tissue cultured potato shoots by PCR/RFLP analyses and by sequencing and phylogenetic clustering. The majority of the samples resulted positive to phytoplasmas enclosed in the ribosomal subgroup 16SrI-F, for the first time detected in potato and in the American continent.
