Abstract

308 BOOK REVIEWS Lack of synchrony with the mothering one leads to insecure or disorganized attachment that can then be refl ected and analyzed in mirror behavior and play. There is a developmental sequence of mirror behaviors. The crucial period is from six to 24 months but could begin as early as three months. Children fi rst show interest, enjoyment, and acceptance and in the second phase they show exploratory behavior and curiosity. They then move to withdrawal and avoidance. The baby identifi es his mirror image with himself when he realizes the absolute contingency, although the image is inverse, of his / her movements with those in the mirror image. The child can then say “ that is me.” This is evidence of self since mirroring is internalized and self is essentially refl ection. The authors apply the concepts not only in research of different age groups but also in the diagnosis and therapeutic approaches to normal and disturbed children of school age and adolescents. They also provide the guidelines for such therapeutic work. Although their interpretations have a margin of subjectivity they are largely persuasive. They present their instru- ments and guidelines along with their fi ndings.
