Both the choice of contributors and the unifying power of ToneUi's ideas gave origin to this remarkable work where one can find up-to-date information on the actual state of the variational calculus. In his introductory article~ L. Cesari gives his due to Leonida Tonelli - the great scientist and teacher. He examines briefly all the branches of 20th century mathematics which were influenced by Tonelli's immense activity. As a foundator of the modern variational calculus, Tonelli contributed not only to the creation of the Italian school in this field, but also to the significant development of nonlinear functional analysis all over the world.
