Contributions to modern caleulus of variations Acta Applicandae Mathematicae 12 (1988), 211-212. 21 1 Book Review Lamberto Cesari (ed.): Contributions to Modern Calculus of Variations, Pitman Research Notes in Mathematics Series 148, Longman Scientific & Tech- nical/copublished in the United States with John Wiley & Sons, Inc., New York, 1987, 13+231 pp., £16.00 The papers collected in this volume are contributions to a symposium, held in Bologna, 13-14 May 1985 to mark the centenary of the birth of Leonida Tonelli. Both the choice of contributors and the unifying power of ToneUi's ideas gave origin to this remarkable work where one can find up-to-date information on the actual state of the variational calculus. In his introductory article~ L. Cesari gives his due to Leonida Tonelli - the great scientist and teacher. He examines briefly all the branches of 20th century mathematics which were influenced by Tonelli's immense activity. As a foundator of the modern variational calculus, Tonelli contributed not only to the creation of the Italian school in this field, but also to the significant development of nonlinear functional analysis all over the world. A. Bensoussan and J.
