The rationale behind the book is the challenge posed by King in 2004: “How do cities in less developed countries perform as urban tourism destinations relative to their equivalents in the developed world?” The editors, both on the forefront of this field of research, have carefully selected a collection of essays that augments the current international scholarship on urban tourism in South Africa. More especially, it successfully provides some starting points to address the uneven scholarly coverage that urban tourism in an African context has received to date. By drawing on a range of case studies, a window is opened on research and policy issues about tourism in South Africa.
