Abstract
In this paper we discover the main purpose of up-to-date information retrieval systems on the Internet and provide their general characteristics. The authors consider the principles of development of Information retrieval systems (IRSs) on the Internet and analyze the process of indexing and its principal peculiarities. More attention is paid to methods for increasing the quality of IRS work. Brief descriptions of the main information retrieval systems are given.
