As indi- cated in the introduction, 'the importance of browse trees and shrubs, especially in the arid, semi-arid and montane zones, is increasingly acknowledged throughout the world today'. Silvo-pastoral systems within agroforestry are therefore attracting more attention, scientific research and political support in a number of countries and within inter- national organizations. Mutual benefits for both, the pastoral and the forestry parts, are being (re)-discovered, highlited and further developed. 'Browse in Africa' fills an important gap of knowledge for all those concerned with improving sllvo-pastoral land- use, specially in fragile eco-systems, and in fact, a great many of the statements may largely be transferred to similar regions of other continents.
