At the end of April 1981 a workshop co-sponsored by the United Nations University, the International Development Research Centre, with collaboration of the International Council for Research on Agroforestry, the International Institute for Tropical Agriculture and the Federal Department of Forestry, Nigeria, was held at the University of Ibadan, Nigeria. Similar workshops had already been arranged in Southeast Asia and South America. For Africa this conference provided the first opportunity for the exchange of ideas and experiences between English and French speaking countries and the fact that the proceedings are published in French and English is certainly a very essential contribution towards overcoming longtime language barriers.
