Everybody talks about smallholder farming systems, the 'rural poor', sustain- ability of tropical agriculture, etc. However, as soon as it comes to searching for solid information, so much needed for decision making, reliable sources may prove to be extremely scarce. The handbook of William C. Beets gives answers to a great many of open questions and offers solutions to a variety of problems. Designing sustainable tropical farming systems requires a multi- disciplinary approach. The understanding of the manifold interactions be- tween competing, complementary and dependent land use components of extreme heterogenity is the key to tropical ecosystems as well as to manage- ment systems.
