MEMBERS OF SCIENTIFIC COMMUNITY Arlen Mikhailovich Il'in (A tribute in honor of his 70th birthday) On January 8, 2002, Arlen Mikhailovich Il'in celebrated his 70th birthday. After graduating with excellence from the famous 59th Moscow secondary school, where many well-known Russian mathematicians studied, in 1949, Il'in entered the Mechanical-Mathematical Department at Moscow State University. His rst scienti c paper [1] represented the results of his diploma work supervised by Ol'ga Arsen'evna Oleinik. There he investigated a boundary value problem for strongly degenerating elliptic equations. Il'in obtained uniform estimates for the solutions and proved the existence and uniqueness theorems using an idea, suggested by Oleinik, of introducing a small parameter and considering a family of elliptic operators converging to the degenerate operator. Most of Il'in's subsequent scienti c achievements are related to the analysis of such problems with a small parameter. The diploma work was later generalized to degenerate parabolic equations in the Ph.D. thesis Il'in defended ahead of schedule, in http://www.deepdyve.com/assets/images/DeepDyve-Logo-lg.png Differential Equations Springer Journals
