Agroforestry for Sustainable Land-use Fundamental Research and Modelling, Temper~e and Mediterranean Applications An international workshop to be held in Montpellier (France) ; 23-28 June 1997 1.15.D1 - 1.15,03 Background Agroforestry has been practised for thousands of years, and is now represented by a number of various lind uses: it is the main management system in a great many areas throughout the world, mostly in the tropics. In temperate regions, due to the present economic and environmental context, there is a trend towards a better integration of agriculture and forestry, with a revival of agroforestry practices. The scientific study of agroforestry has been devoted in the past mostly to tropical regions, focusing on diagnosis and development, but the understanding of complex, multiple use agroforestry systems is becoming a research subject world-wide. Despite great differences in social, economic or political situations throughout the world, fundamental aspects concerning the way agroforestry modifies basic processes are common to many land.use systems. There is now a need to close the gap between North and South and to widely disseminate the basic knowledge gained in recent years.
