CHRONICLE Andreі Vladimirovich RimskiіKorsakov (On His 100th Birthday) DOI: 10.1134/S1063771010050283 In 1932, A.V. RimskiіKorsakov began his career in science and engineering. The combination of musical education and technical knowledge allowed him to work successfully at the Research Institute of Musical Industry (1932–1941), which was organized by Acad. N.N. Andreev. At that time, a number of outstanding scientists were working at the same institute: I.G. Rusa kov, A.A. Kharkevich, B.P. Konstantinov, and others. RimskiіKorsakov studied the formation of sound in keyed musical instruments, the pulsed effect of a string with vibration transfer to the sounding board, and radiation from the bodies of string instruments. He developed methods for measuring the emissive power of resonating frames and performed calculations for piano strings and for the dynamics of keyed mecha nisms. These studies were generalized in the mono graph Musical Instruments [2], which has become a manual for specialists working in the music industry. This book described physical methods that later found application in studies of noise and
