MEMBERS OF SCIENTIFIC COMMUNITY (A Tribute in Honor of His 80th Birthday) On April 13, 2000, Anatolii Dmitrievich Myshkis, a distin- guished Russian mathematician, Doctor of Physical-Mathematical Sciences, Honorary Soros Professor, Academician of the Academy of Nonlinear Sciences, celebrated his 80th birthday. Myshkis was born in Moscow. In 1937, he entered the Department of Mechanics and Mathematics of Moscow State University. In 1941 he, as well as many other students of the department, was called up for military service and directed for continuing education to the N.E. Zhukovskii Air Force Engineering Academy. He gradu- ated from it in 1944 and defended the philosophy doctor thesis "Free Dirichlet Problem" under the supervision of I.G. Petrovskii in 1946. After that Myshkis was transferred to Riga, where he headed a chair at Latvia State University in 1950-1953. In Riga, under the impression of discussions with engineers in radiophysics, Myshkis became interested in a new class of differential equations, which he named equations with retarded argument.
