This nation, which I loved and cared about all my life, Ieven if I did not always agree with what it was doing, has gone to a place where I can no lon- ger find the nation I once loved and admired. The process has been happening over a number of years, and the full impact has truly hit me only as I watch in horror the response to Hurri- cane Katrina. Katrina was a natural disaster of unprecedented dimension, but it also served to reveal, at least to me, the extent to which this nation no longer adheres to the values and con- cerns that it had long stood for. Nor does the federal government seem capable of effective action, not only regarding Katrina but also regarding other sectors.
