LEGISLATION FOR CHILDREN WITII LEARNING DISALlILITIES N OCXOBER 6, the House of Representatives unanimously passed H.R. 13310. I This bill, entitled "Children with Specific Learning Disabilities Act of 1969," was a result of committee discussion on H.R. 8660 and H.R. 9065, which were modi- fied and combined into H.R. 13310 and 13306 following hearings on July 8, 9, and 10. Senate Bill 1190, introduced by Senator Ralph Yarborough in February 1969 and entitIed "Learning Disabilities Act of 1969," has bcen schnluled for committee work, and it is hoped that it will be reviewed and sent to the Senate for a vote. Of particular interest is the number of congressmen who expressed support for the learning-disabilities legislation by coauthoring or submittingcompanionbills. IIANDICAPPED CHILDREN'S EARLY EDUCATION ASSISTANCE ACT RANTS totaling approximately S1 million were awarded during fiscal year G 1969 to twenty-four public and nonprofit private organizations for the estab- lishment of model preschool programs for handicapped children. The program is authorized under Public Law 90-538 and is entitled "The Handicapped Children's Early Education Assistance Act."
