The General Pattern of Development in Australian Education Since World War II THE GENERAL PATIERN OF DEVELOPMENT IN AUSTRALIAN EDUCATION SINCE WORLD WAR II ]. ]. PRATI The most marked developments in Australian education since World War II have been those associated, in one way or another, with the provision of educational facilities to cater for increased numbers of students. This is not something which is unique to the Australian educational scene. In most countries, the post-war years have seen a very great increase in the demand for, and the supply of, education. In those countries with long established systems of education, major post-war developments have been associated with the expansion of secondary schooling, of technical education at all levels and of facilities at the tertiary level. With newer countries, often recently independent and with nationalism a vital question, emphasis has been more on the organization of programmes of mass education, with extension of the primary programmes and with special provision for some secondary and some vocational education. The pattern of developments in Australia has been similar to that of other countries with a relatively long tradition of public education.
